- Dernière chanson de l'album à être enregistrée, à la Nouvelle-Orléans, avec comme producteur et musicien, Daniel Lanois. Dylan est au piano, Lanois au dobro.
- Lanois déclarera que Dylan a écrit le morceau en studio et n'a eu besoin que d'une prise, et qu'il s'agit de sa favorite sur l'album. Quand à Dylan lui-même, voilà son avis au sujet de "Man In The Long Black Coat" : "In some kind of weird way, I thought of it as my 'I Walk the Line,' a song I'd always considered to be up there at the top, one of the most mysterious and revolutionary of all time, a song that makes an attack on your most vulnerable spots, sharp words from a master"

Magnifique chansons, j'adore la version de Lanegan...

Oui une des plus belles chansons de Oh Mercy.
La production est particulièrement remarquable sur ce morceau
Le son d'harmonica en particulier est magnifique
Daniel Lanois a vraiment remis Dylan à l'endroit et la qualité de la chanson doit autant à son créateur qu'au producteur je crois

Ma chanson préférée de Oh Mercy, j'adore l'atmosphère, le rythme de la voix, les rimes, et en effet, une très bonne production qui donne un super son à l'harmonica. Belles paroles aussi. Cette athmosphère crépusculaire sied si bien à la voix d'Old Bob.

Ce matin lorsque la chanson a retentit sur la bobdylan radio j'ai eu des frissons. Je pense que l'arrangement de Lanois est un des plus beaux, Oh mercy et TOOM confondu. Cette chanson est vraiment incroyable. J'aimerais avoir une ou plusieurs bonnes versions lives dans les 90's ou début 2000 si quelqu'un a cela... je suis preneur car je ne trouve rien d'aussi fort que la version studio

Celle de Liverpool 96 est pas mal, bien lancinante :

ah oui merci, je l'avais déjà entendu elle est sympa. D'ailleurs est ce qu'il y a Prague 96 qui traîne quelque part sur la toile en ce moment? de mémoire, dylan chante comme ça tout au long du concert non?
