Jouée régulièrement entre 63 et 65 (souvent en compagnie de Joan Baez), le morceau à des interprétations uniques en 75, 82, 84 et 95.
Il n'y a qu'en 1998 que Dylan jouera onze fois la chanson avec de nouveaux arrangements.

- Le titre de ce morceau folk écrit en 1963 fait référence à l’épître de Paul : "If God is for us, who can be against us?". Un texte religieux souvent interprété de manière différente en temps de guerre et que Dylan utilise en pleine crise des missiles et possible guerre contre le Vietnam. Son texte mêle engagement politique et universalité naïve, retraçant l'histoire de l'Amérique à travers ses ennemis et remettant en question la notion de foi aveugle, la manière dont la religion ou les icônes peuvent être utilisés pour justifier les pire atrocités.
- Même si Dylan déclare n'avoir plagié personne, la mélodie de "With God On Our Side" est pourtant très similaire à "The Patriot Game", une chanson de Dominic Behan, qui a tenté de poursuivre Dylan. On peut également rapprocher la mélodie de "The Merry Month Of May", une ballade traditionnelle irlandaise.
- On retrouve une version live en compagnie de Joan Baez sur le "Bootleg Series Vol.6" ainsi qu'une version avec le NET sur le "MTV Unplugged" enregistré en 1994 où le passage sur les allemands et les russes est étrangement omis. La chanson n'est disponible sur aucune compilation ou best-of.
- Reprises notables : Joan Baez, The Neville Brothers, Manfred Mann, Bon Iver, Odetta, Buddy Miller, etc...
- La chanson a été utilisé dans le générique de fin de "W", le film d'Oliver Stone sur le Président George W.Bush.
